Soundpainting is a language of physical gestures for leading group improvisation and realtime composition.

Similar (but different!) to John Zorn’s Cobra and Butch Morris’ conduction, Soundpainting empowers performers to make creative decisions in the moment that can be developed, sculpted and recontextualised into full group compositions in the moment.

In this introduction you’ll learn the basics of the Soundpainting syntax, a range of gestures and their meanings and have a chance to Soundpaint with the group!

Please bring your instruments and/or voices and clothes you can move in

Suitable for all musicians, 14+

Chris Bartholomew has been soundpainting for the last 3 years making it the focus of his Masters at Goldsmiths University. In 2019 he travelled to Sweden to study with Soundpainting’s inventor, Walter Thompson.
