Two compelling female singer song writers making emotionally vivid alt-folk

Astrid Williamson brings her 9th album to Cobalt whilst India Arkin at 21 is just starting out.

Rather than relying on already well-worn paths of familiar development for her new album that Astrid might have found more  comfortable she has pushed herself to stay as close as possible to the initial sparks of inspiration and to work in a new mode of song writing.

The writings, a mix of poetry, music, and personal journal, capture moments from a year-long tour. Into The Mountain is startling in its frankness, moving from the darkly confessional to the joyously beautiful to reflect Williamson’s own life experiences, and making for a powerful listen.

Hailing from the remote Shetland Islands, Astrid is also a session musician with Dead  Can Dance & her long career has seen many  interesting collaborations including John Cale, Stereophonics, Mortal Coil amongst many others.

India Arkin is a 21-year-old indie singer-song writer inspired by the likes of Matilda Mann, Mild High Club and Lucy Dacus.

Written through the first year of the pandemic, her  EP “No Innocent Bystander”. speaks about seeking out the light in the darkest of situations, using supersonic ethereal soundscapes and experimental sound. She has been featured more than once on BBC Introducing Northeast and BBC Introducing Tees and is very much one to watch.
