An important part of our remit at Cobalt is to make culture affordable AND accessible – many of our events are free or Pay as you feel.

Here’s a round up of cool, cheap or free things you can take part in at Cobalt. We are excited for them all, in particular we’re really looking forward to the ‘Change’ events, informal round table chats with community change-makers followed by collaging and printing so you can make your own leaflets and posters for Change.

Although these events are free or PAYF, if you reserve a ticket online it helps us have a better idea of how many people to expect!

Open House // PLAY // Every Tuesday

An open invitation to absolutely everybody, musicians and definitely non-musicians, to join in the creation of spontaneous sound in a spirit of community, curiosity and play. If you have an instrument, or anything you'd like to make a noise with, bring it – if not, then just bring yourself. The sessions will be led by musicians and require no previous experience. Let's play and make some noise!

POP-UP CHOIR || £7 OR PAYF FOR LOW OR NO WAGE PARTICIPANTS

Pop up choir, all ages welcome, absolutely no experience needed for an afternoon of shared singing, body percussion and uplifting voice work. Basically, boost your serotonin with musical good times & vocal resonance! Expect anything from gospel to British folk or pop. 2-4pm includes break, the environment is relaxed with a fully stocked bar of hot drinks, soft drinks and alcohol.

L.A.D.S Ladies Open Decks + Social

Ladies who DJ or want to DJ?

Come and meet other likeminded women who love music and are already DJ-ing or would like to learn for chatting, mixing, sharing notes and generally addressing the lack of women (or those identifying as women) on the decks in this city.

Bring Vinyl or USB stick if you have it (both decks available) and if you don’t just bring yourselves, your ideas and your musical enthusiasm! Fully stocked bar, toasties, cake, hot drinks available!

BALLAD OF A CHANGING WORLD || FILM SCREENING + Q & A || FREE OR PAYF

Cellist Maja Bugge and 'Inside out' pianist Sarah Nicolls issue a digital yet immersive wake-up call on the urgency of the climate crisis in this 55 minute film made during lockdown. The film 'Ballad of a changing world' combines emotionally-charged music with learning about kittiwakes – birds which are on the move due to climate change. Conversations with scientists in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, UK and Tromso, Norway are interrupted by the sometimes hilarious attempts to make a music show in lockdown. It was commissioned by Cheltenham Music Festival and Arctic Arts in 2021. The screening will be followed by a Q and A with the artist and Dr Helen Wilson from Durham university.

The Kick, The Snare, The Hat & a Clap // Film Screening + Club Night

The Kick, The Snare, The Hat & A Clap is an independent documentary by artist & film maker Susie Davies, which tells the story of the 1990s warehouse party scene in and around the Ouseburn Valley. It features interviews with the organisers, archive footage and an original soundtrack.

The screening is followed a night of old/new skool warehouse sounds of underground Acid, Rave & Techno with TokyoACIDCRU Live & DJ set (90s Warehouse Set), Paul Smyth and Mick Hedley. £5 advance ticket includes entry to both film screening and club night before 9pm.

Poetry + Flash Fiction Open Mic Night with Inky Lab

Local indie press InkyLab are hosting an open mic night of poetry and flash fiction. No themes, no holds barred, anything you've got bring it along on the night. Non-participatory audience welcome too.
