Cobalt is a very hands on project, when it’s open it takes a tiny team all our hours just to keep it running, whilst its been really hard emotionally to be closed, the upside we have found is much more time for strategic development. Behind the scenes we have been working really hard on some important stuff, firstly we have just signed a new lease with the council, this means that we can safeguard the intent behind the project and all of our values for at least the next 30 years. We finally got around to getting our new website fully designed and launched so that we can let you know much more easily about new projects, events and what we are up to!
We thought really hard about how to ride out this pandemic; we are really grateful to have received some funding but we also strongly felt that the world would be left with some significant changes that we needed to respond to swiftly in order to stay resilient and sustainable. We actually already had a top floor co-working space in progress before all this, but now it is refined, with more ‘zooming’ capacity and better built in social distancing. We are delighted to be in receipt of some European Funding and social loan/small grant from The Big Issue Invest. Final designs are in progress and we are starting the build imminently, hoping to be completed by Sept 2021.
Lastly we also have an exciting scheme in progress for the backyard…subject to planning permission and getting a licence granted we plan to create 14 new artists’ studios specifically for designers and makers with a product to sell directly to the public. Alongside a communal art room to be known as the peoples art room, a space for running creative workshops, a riso press, a small kiln + space for visitors to create. Additionally there will be a small food and drink offering to be confirmed and subject to licensing.
We’re hoping to see you very soon!
